Boss, grab a coffee and sit down, because today is June 1st, Children's Day, and I've got a ton of news of all kinds. Seriously, it's like a package deal: from politicians sending us messages, to weather going crazy, plus football, sick leave, and Russian drones. Hold on, let me tell you one by one.
First, the official messages. Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, the guy who promised to clean things up, now says on Facebook that "Romania's children deserve to grow up in a society that offers them safety, education, care, and the chance to follow their dreams." Nice, right? But yeah, easy with the words, because we parents see reality: a quarter of teenagers say adults hardly ever listen to them, according to a World Vision survey of 613 young people aged 15-18, mostly from rural areas. And the biggest issue is anxiety and emotional state. Mioara says my 14-year-old Brian only stays on TikTok and doesn't talk to me except when he wants money for Nikes. So yeah, messages are nice, but in our Berceni neighborhood, it doesn't feel that way.
Then, the weather. Right on June 1st, when I wanted to take Brian out to the green grass, meteorologists issued a Yellow Code for rain and storms in 21 counties, from 10 AM until 10 PM. Basically, all of Transylvania, northern and eastern Muntenia, northeastern Oltenia, southern and southeastern Moldova are affected. In Bucharest, highs of 25-26 degrees, but with afternoon showers. What can you do, bro? Stay inside with the kids and watch cartoons. Seriously, it's like they're messing with us.
Now, the football part. FC Farul Constanța, Hagi's team, managed to stay in the Superliga after beating Chindia Târgoviște 4-2 on penalties, Sunday evening at home in Ovidiu. The score was 1-1 after 90 minutes. Anyway, I'm a Steaua fan, but any Romanian team should stay up, right? Gică the Dinamo fan called to annoy me, but I told him Farul isn't Dinamo, relax.
The good news of the day: starting June 1st, chronic patients and cancer patients get paid sick leave from the first day. Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc, chair of the Defense Committee, said it's a "great injustice" being eliminated. Good for them, now that's a measure! My mother-in-law, Aunt Veta, who has every disease under the sun, will jump for joy. But I wonder how long until the system gets messed up.
And to not miss the conflict, acting Defense Minister Radu Miruță invited the Russians to come see the components of the drone that crashed in Galați, if they say it's not theirs. The expertise confirmed the origin, but the Russians still deny it. Man, seriously! Us with drones, them with lies. It's like we're in a horror movie.
Well, that's June 1st: also World Parents' Day, World Milk Day, and Holy Trinity for Orthodox. Like it or not, you still spend it. Come on, I'm going to take Brian for a soda, maybe it won't rain all day.
