Bro, sit down and grab a coffee, 'cause I've got news that'll make you realize just how much they're stealing around here. Listen, dude, between April 2025 and April 2026, 31,235 employees disappeared from the public sector. That's from 1,306,234 down to 1,274,999. And guess who's paying? Well, almost half of them are teachers! That's right, the education system lost 14,963 positions, a drop of 4.85%. To put it in perspective, for every two state employees who vanished, one is a teacher. So says the Ministry of Finance, cited by Edupedu.ro.
This means that instead of investing in schools, they abolished 14,000 positions since October 2025, through a Government Decision made by the Ministry of Education. And now, one year after Law 141/2025, Education is the champion of cuts. While local administration - town halls, county councils - lost only 9,058 positions (that's 1.93%), schools lost 5,905 more. The pace? At town halls they cut 2% in a year, at schools almost 5%.
Man, I have a daughter, Ioana, she's in third grade. When I heard her school lost its homeroom teacher, I flipped my lid. How can you do that? Mioara says there's no one to teach - and she's right, because Romania has the highest early school dropout rate in the EU. But them, at the Ministry of Defense, they increased their headcount. Over there it's all good, 'cause money's flowing.
And so, in Cluj, where renting a studio costs as much as an average salary, teachers are getting fired. I for one ain't buying this "budget reform" story. Who's paying? Still us, the parents. So I'm off to explain to Mioara how I lost a bet on the math teacher - she says school's a waste of time, but when she hears about the job cuts, she shuts up and stares wide-eyed.
