Boss, what do you know! I was chilling with Mioara in the evening, she with her Lidl coupons, me on TikTok, and I come across this news: Temu, that Chinese platform where even my wife bought a phone charger that melted after a week, has been fined 200 million euros by the European Commission! Yeah, you heard right, 200 grand, bro! The reason? They didn't reduce the risk of selling illegal products on the platform. I mean, exactly what we knew, but now the EU said 'enough'. Don't believe me? Look, they officially announced it on Thursday, under that Digital Services Act - DSA - which forces giants to check what's being sold there. Well, if I think about it, about a month ago I got a package from Temu with some headphones that looked like AirPods but sounded like a meat grinder. I said I wouldn't make a fuss, 'cause hey, 15 lei, but now I understand why it came to this.

Listen up, Temu entered Europe in 2023 and grew like mushrooms after rain, competing with our companies through dirt-cheap prices. How did they do it? They shipped directly from warehouses in China, and the low value of the packages - under 150 euros - exempted them from customs duties. I can just see Mitică, my boy from the terrace, buying 60-lei sneakers from Temu and bragging he's smart. Well, bro, now the EU is changing the game: from July 2026, every package under 150 euros will pay a fixed tax of 3 euros per item. That's exactly what's needed to limit these cheap imports from China. And it's not the only one: the EU also has investigations in the works for Shein and AliExpress. France has called for even harsher measures, claiming they sell dangerous products. Of course, when you order a 20-lei water boiler, what do you expect? Fire in the house?

Wait, it's not over! Temu is the second company sanctioned under the DSA, after Elon Musk's X, which got 120 million euros in December 2025. So it seems the EU is starting to dish out fines on a roll. The platform has until the end of August to submit an action plan - how they'll reduce the sale of illegal products. Well, I say they should start with those chargers that pop, but nobody listens to me. Just like with Mioara: I told her not to buy from Temu anymore, 'cause the house will burn, but she goes: 'leave it, it's cheaper'. Now, maybe she'll wise up.

In the end, I look at this news and say: who pays? Still us, the consumers. The fine is on the platform, but prices will go up. So, if you want to order something from Temu, do it before July, 'cause after that you'll be shelling out an extra 3 euros for every damn product. And don't forget: check what you buy, so you don't end up with a toy that explodes in your arms, like what happened to a guy from Cluj - yeah, that bubble with apartments at 4000 euros per square meter, but he still buys on Temu, 'cause, hey, the Romanian way.
