Bro, grab a beer and sit down, 'cause I've got news that'll make you think of Indiana Jones movies, not bank loans! Did you know that in Romania we have a town built inside a volcanic crater? No joke, man! I'm talking about Baia Sprie, in Maramureș, a place I wouldn't have noticed until now, but I found out from a buddy of mine, a hiking enthusiast, that it's right in the hearth of volcanoes from millions of years ago. Oh boy, what treasures we have around here! And here I was watching documentaries about volcanoes in Iceland, while the treasure was in my own backyard!
Listen up: Baia Sprie sits in a depression created by the collapse of former volcanic formations, right at the foot of the Gutâi Massif. The volcanic activity was so violent during the Neogene that it left behind mountains and deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. And guess what? Dealul Crucii, which dominates the town, is actually the "core" of a former volcanic apparatus. That's the trick, bro! The mining here was among the most important in Transylvania, and the centuries-old galleries followed veins created by cooled lava. I look at my 2008 BMW and think: where did all this precious metal come from? It's like the whole area is a treasure chest!
But the coolest thing is the Blue Lake, which isn't even natural - it formed around 1919-1920, after an old mine gallery collapsed - the Domnișoara Mine. The cavity filled with rainwater and seepage, and voilà, a major tourist phenomenon was born. The water changes color depending on temperature and sunlight! In spring it's light blue or azure, in summer it turns emerald green, and even gets brownish or dark reflections. The reason? Dissolved sulfur and copper compounds from the former mine galleries. I've seen pictures online and you'd think it's a pearl in the middle of the mountains.
Mioara looked at me and said: "Take us on vacation too, not just to Bulgaria for all-inclusive food!" Ioana wanted to know if you can swim, but apparently the water has a unique chemical concentration, I don't know if it's healthy to bathe - better drink a beer on the terrace and enjoy the view. Brian, of course, said: "Well, I see on TikTok that the Blue Lake is viral, dad!" That's right, now it's famous here too, not just abroad.
This is Romania, bro: we have volcanoes, gold, lakes that change color, but we still look at the 25-lei shawarma. If you want to see the wonder too, rush to Baia Sprie, in Maramureș. It's closer than you think - and you don't need a visa! At least I'll go show the pictures to Gică Dinamovistul, so he sees that we have beautiful places too, not just the Alps. Cheers!
