Bro, pour yourself a coffee and sit down, because I've got news that'll make you realize flying out of Romania is like playing the lottery: you never know if you'll make it or get stuck on the tarmac! For real, man, I saw some numbers from AirAdvisor that blew my mind. At Otopeni, flight cancellations have increased 30 times compared to last year! I mean, between February and May 2026, the cancellation rate hit 3.15%, when in 2025 it was only 0.10%. And it's not just Bucharest, boss. At Cluj, on Avram Iancu, it went up 82 times – yeah, you heard that right, from 0.03% to 2.47%. At Sibiu, even worse: 9.26% cancellations, meaning almost one in ten flights gets axed. Craiova also made the list, with 1.91% cancellations and 6.22% delays. And Brașov-Ghimbav, which had zero delays last year, now sits at 4.92% delays. Man, what times!
And why, bro, is this happening? Well, they say the price of aviation fuel has doubled since the start of 2026. So the low-cost airlines, which dominate short and medium routes, start canceling like crazy. Over 64% of cancellations at Otopeni are on medium-haul flights, 1,500-3,500 km – like London, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt. Exactly the routes our diaspora uses, bro! Mioara said if one more flight is delayed, she'll cut my beer allowance, but what about the people working there who can't get back on time?
Now, the good part: on May 8, 2026, the European Commission, through DG MOVE, published official guidelines reconfirming that passengers are entitled to compensation of up to 600 euros, according to EU Regulation 261/2004. And listen to this: they say fuel price volatility is not an extraordinary circumstance – meaning it's a normal commercial risk, so airlines can't weasel out. And they can't slap retroactive surcharges on already sold tickets. Good for them, but let's see how many actually get that money, because I'm not buying this story. Who pays? We do, with our frayed nerves.
Anton Radchenko, the head of AirAdvisor, said it cold as ice: "Airlines make commercial decisions, that's their right. But they can't shift the cost onto passengers by denying them compensation." Exactly, bro! That's how it should be, not like some who'd fob you off with ten coffee vouchers. Now, their recommendation is to check eligibility, immediately request assistance at the airport – food, drink, accommodation, re-routing – keep all documents and receipts, don't accept vouchers without knowing what you're signing, and file claims promptly. And you can also report to the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority or ANPC. So if you get left behind, don't sit around like a cat waiting for the calendar – file a complaint!
Man, and so, while I'm waiting at the airport gates with Brian behind me wanting to see the planes, they're pulling their tricks. But I'm not worried, because I know Romanians are resourceful: if they can't fly, they'll drive 20 hours to Paris, but they'll get there. Alright, I'm off to tell Mioara not to buy any more Wizz Air tickets until things calm down, because maybe we'll catch a canceled flight and score 600 euros – who knows, maybe we'll even get a beer out of it!
