Bro, hold on tight! The Financial Newspaper, those guys with the numbers and business, came up with something that caught me off guard. On June 8, starting at 9:30 AM, they're organizing a major conference: ZF Marketing & Sport Business. It's the first time they're doing an event just about sports business and marketing, man. And I'm not kidding! Representatives from companies that pour money into sports, famous athletes, marketing people – all those who know how to make money from football, tennis, Formula 1, and whatever else is out there. Mioara, my wife, told me: "Hey, maybe you'll learn how to make money from sports too, not just drink beer at Fane's terrace." Well, look, I'm learning, bro!
Let me tell you what they'll be discussing there, so you see it's no joke. They'll talk about which sports and formats attract the biggest audience – meaning where everyone's watching, from football to handball. How big is the sports marketing market? Billions, bro, billions! And why do brands pour money into sports events? Obviously, to sell. But also how to choose a long-term partner with a sports organization – because it's not like at Mitică's wedding, where you pull a scam and that's it. And then how do you make money from that audience? I mean, if 10 million people watch you at a match, how do you turn them into customers? That's the million-dollar question, which I, at the terrace, haven't solved yet. But maybe I'll find out at the conference.
And here's what I think is cool: In the West, sports formats are pulling scary audiences. English football, Formula 1 – they're all on the rise. Now, the FIFA World Cup starts on June 11 and runs until July 19. Word is it'll be the biggest audience in history, bro! Major global brands are scrambling to associate with these events. The market is growing in terms of number of events and viewers. Me, when the World Cup is on, I take time off work and watch every match. Brian, my boy, screams at the TV like he's in the stands. Mioara says we're crazy. But what does she know about marketing?
Here in Romania, this stuff is starting to move too. Sports entertainment formats, like the Sports Festival, are catching on more and more. This year, that festival hosts Simona Halep's official retirement match on June 13. Yes, yes, Simona is officially retiring, bro! She, our greatest tennis player. And she's coming to the Sports Festival to play her last match. It's going to be madness, with all the big brands there, fighting to be partners. Me, if I were younger and slicker, I'd invest in something like that. But look, at least I'm going to the conference to see how it's done. Maybe I'll catch an idea and make an honest buck. Or at least learn how to sell tickets to Steaua matches better, because so far I only know how to curse the referee from Fane's terrace.
