Yo, hold up, let me tell you what happened today. I was scrolling online, and apparently Romania has only 138 kilometers of expressway. 138! That's like from Berceni to Fane's terrace a few times, but it's no big deal. And out of those, the DEx6 Brăila-Galați, 10.77 km, has been "almost done" for six months, but it's stuck like cold polenta in the fridge. The reason? The cables, bro! Those cables for the bridge over the Siret River. A factory in Ukraine shut down because of the war, and the Italians who are supposed to deliver them are late. So we're just sitting here waiting like idiots.
The CNAIR director, Cristian Pistol, said last year that the section would be ready in the first half of 2026. Well, now it's June, and that cable-stayed bridge, 307 meters long - the second in Romania after the one at Agigea - is still unfinished. Alin Șerbănescu, the spokesperson, explained to Libertatea that the asphalt, markings, guardrails, viaducts - everything is ready, but without the cables, they can't install the deck. What can I say, it's like waiting for the elevator in my building that's been broken for a month.
The contract for DEx6 was signed in April 2021 with Dorinel Umbrărescu, 371 million lei. The initial deadline was April 2024, but they moved it to December 2025, and now to fall 2026. Why? Besides the war, there was also the Ministry of Environment that delayed handing over the land for the bridge foundations over the Siret - by ten months, man! And now the physical progress is at 95.5%, but "frozen" for half a year, as CNAIR says. Man, it's like waiting in line for payments, you just stand there and nothing moves.
And so, Romania's high-speed road network barely reaches 1,418 km, of which only 138 km are expressways. In 2026, we haven't even opened a single new kilometer in the first months. They expect about 11 km of expressway this year, especially this cursed DEx6. In the meantime, the suspension bridge at Brăila, which has been ready since last year, sits useless because you can't get to it quickly. That's Romania for you: we build a miracle bridge but forget the access roads.
Who pays? We do, bro. 371 million lei gone, and we're still waiting. Those cables aren't coming, the factory in Ukraine closed, the Italians are busy, and we're staring at 10 km of road like it's treasure. For now, I'm going to explain to Mioara why we won't make it to the beach this year - because even though the Brăila bridge is cool, you can't cross it.
